The Story Behind BALADNA 1981™

In Arabic, baladna (بلدنا) means “our country,” “our hometown,” or simply “our place.” For Arab Hyphenated, the word represents something larger than geography. It reflects the people, memories, traditions, and communities that continue to shape us long after we leave home.

BALADNA 1981™ is rooted in a personal story.

In 1981, founder Raja Althaibani’s father, Mohamed, left Yemen and arrived in New York in search of opportunity. Like countless immigrants before and after him, he crossed borders, learned a new city, built a life from the ground up, and created opportunities for future generations.

That journey eventually connected Brooklyn, Yemen, and later Istanbul. It also reflects the experience of millions of people across the Arab diaspora who carry more than one home, more than one language, and more than one sense of belonging.

The BALADNA™ Collection was created to honor those journeys. It celebrates the families who left everything behind, the neighborhoods that welcomed them, the businesses they built, and the communities they helped shape. It is a reminder that identity is not defined by choosing one place over another, but by carrying multiple histories and cultures at once.

The collegiate lettering pays homage to classic American sportswear, reimagined through the lens of immigrant identity and diasporic experience. The result is a piece that feels familiar while telling a story that is often missing from mainstream fashion.

Artwork & Craftsmanship

The BALADNA 1981™ graphic draws inspiration from classic American collegiate sportswear, reinterpreted through the lens of Arab diaspora identity.

The word Baladna means "our place" or "our homeland" in Arabic. Combined with the year 1981, the design serves as a tribute to founder Raja Althaibani's father, Mohamed, who arrived in New York from Yemen that year in search of opportunity and a new beginning.

The bold athletic lettering references a visual language often associated with belonging, community, and pride. By pairing that familiar aesthetic with an immigrant story, the design reclaims and expands who gets represented within those narratives.

Clean, timeless, and intentionally understated, the artwork was designed to feel equally at home in Brooklyn, Dearborn, Sana'a, London, Istanbul, and beyond.
